We had a lot of fun at the Eeco center on Monday. We learned about food webs and got to go for a little hike too. We planted gourds in the garden this week and we got some new "mystery" plants in our classroom. We compared our mystery plants to pictures of other plants and we discovered that they are not tomatos, carrots or lettuce. We also figured out that we have two different kinds of mystery plants. We learned a new way to make pictures using only dots called Pointillism. We had a lot of fun making our own pointillism drawings. Our caterpillars finally arrived. Most didn't make the trip but we have a few in our bug catcher. We did some research this week on butterflies and we think we know what will happen. We will be taking notes and making observations over the next few weeks to see if we are right.

For the last few weeks we have been reading different Eric Carle books and we have been paying close attention to the art work in those books. On Wednesday with the help of Ashley's grandmother we tried our hand at Eric Carle style art work. We also wrote two Eric Carle style stories. One was in the style of "Ours Brun, dis-moi" and the other was in the style of "The Hungry Caterpillar."
We've been working hard on writing this week. We will be working on writing our own books soon and we needed to find a good way to organize our ideas. We decided that a story needs characters (Qui?) a setting (Ou?), a problem and a solution. We came up with lists of possible characters, settings, problems and solutions. We then told each other silly stories using those ideas. As a class we wrote a story about a monster. We all had lots of ideas. Next week we will be working on creating our own idea lists so we can write our own stories. We also talked about forests this week. We learned that forests are full of life, plants, animals and insects. We learned that some forests are very wet (like the coastal rain forests in vancouver). We learned that the Boreal forest covers 50% of Canada. In Math, we are working with 2D and 3D shapes. We are learning their names and learning to recognize them by counting their sides and points. We are also still working on solving word problems. This week we had a fun field trip to the Art Gallery. We prepared for mother's day, played math games, went to music and danced. We also picked our final Genius Hour topics. Next we will get serious about our research and try to narrow down our question. We are learning about habitats. This week we talked about mountains, lakes, ponds and rivers. We learned about two ways that mountains are formed and about the different things we can find on mountains. We also learned the differences between rivers, lakes and ponds. We had fun making our own lake and river outside. We also created three part stories. We illustrated them and we wrote them first in our journals and after we typed them on the tablets. We are learning about organizing our stories and we are also learning how to reread our work and make corrections.
