This week we got special new visitors in our classroom. Caterpillars! We will be watching them and learning all about them. We are also writing up our animal reports. We have been learning about a special animal for the last few weeks and we are now writing about what we learned. Each students chose one animal to learn about. The choices were wolves, deer, salmon, eagles, squirrels or snakes. In math we have been learning about sorting geometric shapes. This week we have been concentrating on sorting shapes that slide and shapes that roll. We learned that shapes that slide have a flat side and shapes that roll have a rounded side. We also learned that some shapes slide and roll. We had fun predicting if shapes would slide or roll in our journals and then testing our hypothesis. | Our words list anniversaire s'approche reviens manège debout amusant s'amuse soleil Sounds we are reviewing ien eau au eu en an |

Another fun, busy and rewarding week. The students had a great time at the Eeco center. We learned about different local plants and went for a hike in the woods. We also had a chance to play on the playground at the park. On Thursday we had a visit from Roger Dallaire. He is a french performer and puppeteer. We watched a great show and heard some fun songs all in French! You can hear some of the songs we heard here: http://www.rogerdallaire.ca/le-ptit-cordonnier/ and you can watch a clip bellow.
In math this week we were learning to add numbers with 10 and 9. We learned that adding to 10 is easy because we have 1 (dizanne) (tens) and then we put the other number in the ones place (les unités). So we know that 10+5= 15 because there is 1 ten and 5 ones. We are beginning to figure out that adding with 9 is easy too. We are learning to regroup our numbers to make 10 and then see how many ones are left. (hint.... it is always one less than the number before).
In writing we have been talking about non-fiction this week. We are practicing non-fiction texts. We learned that non-fiction texts can be about something that happened to us or our family and they can also be about science, socials or other topics. We are also starting our Eric Carle author study. We read http://www.amazon.com/Ours-Blanc-Dis-Moi-French-Edition/dp/2871421900 and http://www.amazon.ca/Kangourous-ont-ils-maman-Eric-Carle/dp/2871422273. What a fun week we had! In math we are practicing counting on to help us solve addition questions. That means starting from the highest number and counting from there. For example if I see 10+ 5 I can say 10 and count five more 11, 12,13,14,15. We are also learning to do addition using a 10 frame. Here is a game to help practice: Double 10 Frame game. In reading many of our classmates have been moving up levels. Our goal for the end of the year is to be at level 8 or higher. We are working hard to make that happen by practicing, practicing, and practicing. In writing we have been working on creating out own version of the three little pigs. We also wrote a silly class story called the three little wolves. We watched these two Disney classics about the three little pigs too. In Science we have been learning about force and motion. We learned some important words and concepts. We learned pousse (push) tire (pull) soulever (lift) gravité (gravity) and friction (friction). We tested some of our theories about the forces during our three little pigs day. We built houses out of various materials and the big bad wolf (Mme Hawtree's hairdryer) came to blow the houses down. We learned that it is very hard for the big bad wolf to blow down well build houses. We then found some items the wolf could blow down. |
