Monday was groundhogs day. We learned a little about groundhogs (les marmottes). We found out they lived in the ground and that they had teeth like a beavers that grow all the time. We made our own groundhog puppets and went outside to see if we would find a shadow. We didn't. We then went back inside to try and figure out what we needed to have in order to be able to see a shadow. We discovered that we needed a light source. Outside that is usually the sun. Inside we used flashlights and the smartboard projector. We watched an interesting video where people used their bodies to make cool shadows. Bumbershoot came to school this week and we got to see a version of Little Red Riding Hood. We also watched two other versions of the story in French and compared them. | In reading we are practicing stopping and asking questions when we read. There are two kinds of questions we are talking about. Questions that clarify our understanding (What is happening in the story?) and wondering questions (I wonder why he did that? I wonder what will happen next). We are also still making connections when we read. Our sounds this week were Hard G an Soft G. The letter G follows the same rules as the letter C. It is hard with A,O,U or a consonant. It is soft (J) with E,I,Y. Here is a game you can try to practice: http://brigitteprof.brigitteleonard.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/g1/index.html In math we are talking about subtraction. We learned that the - sign means that our answer will be smaller(or equal to) the the number we started with. It means that something has been taken away, given away or isn't part of the original set. We had fun explore subtraction using fruit gummies. We wrote subtraction questions as we ate our gummy treats. We saw with our own eyes that 8-1=7 and we got a tasty treat too! We also learned that the number 0 changes nothing. We figured out that when you subtract a number by 0 the number doesn't change. On the other side we also found out that when we subtract a number by itself we always get 0. |
